Service
Floridians and visitors are customers of the state in all services provided. This relationship is especially true in the area of transportation. Floridians want to know that they are being served through the careful management of their tax dollars on infrastructure projects. Citizens and visitors are interested in traveling to, from, or within Florida safely with minimal delays.
Why Is This Important?
Even with a state budget as large as Florida's, there are important priorities that traditionally compete with each other for proper funding. Public Safety, Education, and Public Health, are joined by Transportation for budget requests to carry out their mission. In any state where resources are limited, customer service means completing construction and repair projects on time and on budget whenever humanly possible.
The Department of Transportation and the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles are committed to safety and service as part of their mission. With Florida’s continued population growth and the challenges of dwindling funds, resources must be leveraged to provide the best possible service to our citizens and visitors by providing new and innovative ways to meet Florida’s needs.
How Is Florida Doing?
State road construction jobs were completed on time at a rate of 86 percent during fiscal year 2008-09. Those projects completed within budget stood at 80 percent, slightly lower than the previous year, but higher than two years ago. The average time to complete a project fell by nearly one full month.
The Florida Highway Patrol provides invaluable safety services to the citizens and visitors of Florida. During calendar year 2009, members of the Highway Patrol assisted nearly 300,000 motorists. In addition, the Patrol responded to nearly 70% of all calls for service within 30 minutes during the same period.

What Influences Service?
Good customer service begins at the top with a commitment to serve the people who pay the taxes that fund the government. Managers must be good stewards of the people's money and instill that ethic in their managers and employees.
Managers must work with contractors to ensure proper resource management, while office employees must treat customers with respect and efficiency. This culture of good stewardship will demonstrate to the public that their tax money – and the extra fees they are paying – is being well spent. A smiling and friendly toll collector can have a positive impact. Such an ethic must be instilled from the department's top leaders.
Members of the Florida Highway Patrol and their actions are guided daily by three core values: Courtesy- treating others fairly and professionally, Service- rendering aid and assistance to members of the public, and Protection- protecting life and property. Responding to all calls for service in a timely manner and rendering roadside assistance is a key goal of the Patrol.
What Is the State's Role?
State government is required to provide efficient and reliable service to the people of Florida as they meet the requirements to enjoy the privilege of driving in this state. This includes assisting motorists while traveling around the state and obtaining or renewing driver’s licenses. Beginning January 1, 2010, Florida will have new documentation requirements for residents renewing or obtaining a new driver license or identification card. For office visits, customers must bring original documents that prove one’s identity, social security number and residential address. Customers should visit www.gathergoget.com to find an interactive checklist for required documents to bring prior to visiting a driver license office.
